Library Tasting of 2007 Levitation and Illusionist

Hey folks! It’s been a while since we’ve updated our blog! That certainly doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy. By now you know about our new tasting room in Woodinville. Our team can’t wait to host you the next time you are in the neighborhood, so pop on in or make an appointment online to see the new digs! We think you’ll enjoy the Justin Hampton poster exhibition that we currently have on display, and we KNOW that you’ll enjoy the wines! And our SODO tasting room is busier than ever with events and tastings. Make sure to check our Events Calendar here on the website, it has all the fun details! Same for Walla Walla!

LIBRARY TASTING NOTES

Every month, we’re going to take one for the team, so to speak, and open a couple of library wines in our cellar and let you know how they’re tasting! For those of you who have some of our older vintages in your cellars, this will give you an idea about how these wines are showing, and whether you should drink up or cellar a few more years! If you have any recommendations for me, shoot me an email with your request of WHICH wine to pop open from our cellar and we’ll try to fit it in!

I recently popped open 2 different 2007 wines that have been hiding in my cellar for the last 15+ years! Both the 2007 Levitation and 2007 Illusionist were each stunning in their own way. The Levitation Syrah was built around Lewis and Les Collines Vineyards, the same 2 vineyards which make up our Levitation Syrah today! In 2007 we also worked with a vineyard that some of you old school Washington wine lovers will recognize: Portteus Vineyard in the upper Yakima Valley.

The wine still showed amazing color after decanting, with a dark purple center core, loads of acidity, a nice meaty note to balance the fruit…just a lovely example of an aged Syrah. I’d drink these if you have them, but they will be drinking well for another few years.

The Illusionist was actually a Cab based blend, and not varietally labeled as Cabernet. That vintage, we blended in some Malbec and Petit Verdot, along with Cab Franc, Merlot, and even some Syrah. It was also showing well, with an earthy core that gave way to some beautiful dark fruit notes, green peppercorn, a nice herbal back note, and loads of dark fruits and some cedar from the oak treatment. It reminded me of great, aged Bordeaux, but more like a 10 year old wine not a 17 year old version from Washington.
