Small Paul
“King and lead ‘doggy Kevin Murphy share vocal duties across four tracks that shimmer like a mirage across a dusty Eastern Washington landscape.”- Seattle Times
Small Paul was born in a Seattle basement In the early days of COVID as a happy accident between housemates Kevin Murphy from The Moondoggies, Chris King and Malcolm Roberts from Chris King & The Gutterballs with Seth McDonald from All Star Opera. What started out as casual music chairs between friends overtime blossomed into a four headed creative monster. During the long strange days of quarantine the project’s ease and freedom allowed for productive hours of symbiotic collaboration and summoning songs for strange times.
The four songs from Small Paul’s debut “Strangeland” reflect ideas of traveling forward, movement and self reflection. The images of the road that rolls under us as we push ahead through grief, change, isolation, and the passing of time and people. The EP at its core captures the band playing together live. Kevin and Chris trade lead vocal and drum/guitar duties, with Malcolm contributing backing vocals for Small Paul’s three part harmonies as well as bass and Seth coloring the songs with keys.
‘Strangeland’ EP, is mixed by Seattle veteran, Erik Blood (Shabazz Palaces, The Moondoggies), and recorded by Bradford Button at Barndoor studio. The band is currently working on their debut full length album set to release sometime in 2023.

Black Fret graciously invites our community to join their members for an evening of live music from local artists. Artists and music will be announced day of show but come for the surprise of finding and listening to new music in an intimate setting. This event is no cover and a RSVP is not required.
Black Fret is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that believes popular music is art, worthy of support as the opera and symphony have been supported for generations. Black Fret’s mission is simple: to support the creation and performance of music. But behind its simplicity lies great significance. The music industry, always a hard environment for any artist to make it, is only becoming more challenging. Yet the depth and breadth of incredible music being made in many of our communities is better than ever.
It is the dedication, hard work, creativity and hustle of these artists that inspire us to support this music. We believe that a city is built on the work of its creators. And that unless a community comes together to support those who create, especially when macro economic forces are making it harder and harder for bands to exist, let alone thrive, then we will move from cities of creators to cities of consumers.
